Yes, some of these are designed absolutely from the ground up to run
this way.
I'm sure, to pass UL, they had to go to EXTREME lengths to prove safety
under all sorts of malfunctions, such that energy could not get back
across the
isolation barrier and fry stuff, start fires, etc.

But, trying to take a servo drive NOT designed for it is VERY risky
business!
I tried to tell this guy that there ARE low cost transformers around,
and gave
him some suggestions where to look.
