John, sorry for not addressing your question. Though it is a good
idea, it is not practical to do what you suggest. A step motor drive
needs to sense phase current. An external amplifier will not provide
that function; it would need to be custom designed to do this. At
that point you may as well design a new drive from the ground up. All
the stuff would then be in one box instead of two.
