Alan,
Consider milling a 90 deg angle at what would be your
"Home". Then you could use an edge finder to locate Home any
time you wanted.

Eyeballing a point is not very accurate. Any change in
lighting can cause an aparent change in position.

That depends on how the part is located. Do you have a flat
edge mateing with a vise jaw? Does the part fit a jig in
only one position? If either of these are true, you should
be able to locate the part with one point.
