I agree with you. Thats why I use the starrett.

FWIW, I have also "picked up" the height gauge lines w/ this
technique. As someone mentioned, at the proper scale(frame of
reference) they look like the grand canyon!!! Just have to do the x
then y. Grabbing the intersection w/o a punch DON'T work :-)
