Hi,

All this talk of meachanical methods of edge finding makes me wonder whether
anyone is aware of optical centre/edge finders. These are easily available
and are by no means impossible to make - half an old pair of wartime
binoculars will provide all the necessary optical bits - a right angled
prism, lenses for an eyepiece and, usually, a cross-hairs or other similar
scale. Then its just a matter of a bit of fairly careful machining to make a
holder which will slip in place of the tool and position the eyepiece cross
hairs image directly over where the tool centre would be.
Assuming you can then hit a 'home' button or something, the machine would be
set up without all the hassle of adding or subtracting half diameters
orwondering why the motor has gone quiet after a sonalert has echoed around
your ear-muffs! ;o)
