Fully duded up, your Sherline will do fine on surfacing.
I built up two for a friend in the SF bay area that does medical
design/prototypes. One was showcased in the Flashcut booth at the Santa
Clara Tool Show several years ago. It had cut a 1/2 scale version of a
3D surfaced handle in wax, and for the remainder of the show it was
tracing over the surface. I was surprised at the quality of the surface.
In terms of finish, it looked as good as any wax part cut on the big
machines. Keep it lubed and the ways tight, should be no problem.
