Not sure how you get rid of the unwanted paper, I think it just
fell away, can't remember right now. I suppose if for instance you
wanted to cut a circle out of the center, you could first cut a lead in
from the edge of the sheet, then cut the circle. that would assure that
the excess would fall away.

As for the focus of the laser, if that's the case, I imagine some sort of
holding device to keep the paper tight would be required while cutting.
Also the laser would be required to move up the thickness of the paper
with each pass to keep it in focus.

Sorry about being so vague, but it was probably a year ago that I saw it.

The most interesting
new method uses paper. No, it is not paper mache'. The part is
made by gluing layers of paper together, with each layer being cut
with a laser. The result is the consistency of wood, and can be
sanded like wood. The raw material for the paper based system is
standard butchers paper (a high quality heavy paper). The paper
system parts do not shrink.
