What Art said.. And my two bits worth..

The rating of the L298 is 46V, and absolute max 50V.

I've personally run them at up to 35V without any problems.

I have seen one problem where on a higher voltage rail (32V I think from
memory) the clamping diodes were breaking down reverse biased, and was
producing some weird effects. Check the rating/type of he clamping diodes.
