I was a professional machine designer for well over 20 years. I've been
using Quick CAD now for quite some time.
It is a smaller version of AutoCAD and is produced by the same company. I
swear by it! The cost is much less than AutoCAD, it's easy to learn and if
the boy gets into drafting professionally, it should be very easy for him to
graduate to Auto CAD in the future.

purpose Cadd program for drawing machinery, not just parts. He is trying to
decide primarily between the professional version of Turbo-cadd and
Autocadd. Of course the TurboCadd salesman says that Turbocadd is better
and more popular than Autocadd. Anyone care to comment, and steer a young
fellow along his career as a machinist/fabricator/cnc guy?
