Might also look at MicroStation. If he is a student anyplace, he can
get it at the student discount.

IntelliCAD as mentioned above in this thread is a good legal free way
to learn about AutoCAD like SW. The comment about what it will be
used for is important. In Mechanical design, at least at Boeing and
several other large companies I am familiar with, ProE is the package
that is used. I've heard it is also available to students - but I
haven't seen it in any college book stores yet.
