Hi Tom,
Autocad is the industry standard and would probably give your lad more
options for future employment but I wouldn't go to the expense of buying a
full professional package straight away. You can download a free copy of
Intellicad from Cadopia.com and have a fully functional Autocad 14 clone
free.
This has virtually all the functionality of the latest Autocad and is a very
good way to learn it. You will also find that all cad systems are aimed at
particular markets, mostly for architects and so, if your son is intending
to use his cad for engineering specifically, you may eventually have to go
for Autocad Mechanical Desktop or one of the more specialised packages like
Catia etc. which will do things like 3D screw threads etc.
HTH.

purpose Cadd program for drawing machinery, not just parts. He is trying to
decide primarily between the professional version of Turbo-cadd and
Autocadd. Of course the TurboCadd salesman says that Turbocadd is better
and more popular than Autocadd. Anyone care to comment, and steer a young
fellow along his career as a machinist/fabricator/cnc guy?
