Solidworks is not cheap. But with it, drawings are almost an afterthought.
We have prototyped whole products (the plastic parts) in SLA, had sheet
metal brackets and machined parts made, all literally without a drawing. I
have had several injection molds made, up to a 14" x 5" x 5" bezel for a
laboratory instrument, without drawings. It's to the point that the only
information that needs to be on the drawing are material and surface finish
and a couple critical QC dimensions.

Solidworks is not cheap (and frankly you need to be on the maintenance
contract because they update the file format each year--non backwards
compatible--because the part complexity and sophistication is increasing so
rapidly) but the cost and time savings and unambiguosity (?) of the part
definition are well worth it (speaking in terms of my "day job" designing
equipment for a biotech company.)

Best regards,

Randy
