Tom: As long as the CURRENT ratings of both the primary and secondary are
not exceeded (by much, for more than a couple minutes, anyway), this would
"work". However, the resulting voltage will probably not be "right". Might
be within 95%, though. The ratios in a "two-to-one" or "one-to-two"
transformer are not exactly 2:1 or 1:2, but the secondary usually adds 4% to
10%, depending on the size of the transformer. (if larger than 1KVA, this %
may be even smaller, yet!). But for "quick motor-tests", especially if
no-load, you might survive a try. Be very careful, and NEVER leave such a
kludge connected and "running" without you BEING there, with a CO2
fire-extinguisher at hand, pin removed!
