First off, lilo does a bang up job of handling multiple boot
scenarios. Documentation is plentiful on the web including specific
scenarios. Dual booting Windoze and linux is very common and very
well documented.
As to the MBR, what sorts of problems? Some can be taken care of
using an undocumented parameter to fidsk.
fdisk /mbr
Use this ONLY after reading about it. It is not assured to fix all
problems and can indeed introduce new ones. Do not use it until you
have researched it.
There are also DOS tools on most linux distributions that can
manipulate the MBR and partition tables. They are extremely powerful
and should not be used unless you fully understand what you are doing.
First thing to do is take a snapshot of a known good boot sector with
any one of 100s of tools out there. Put this on a bootable DOS
diskette and test it to make sure it works as expected. After that
you can afford to make a few otherwise catostrophic errors.
Without knowing the precise scenario, precise answers cannot be
given. The best thig to do is find the linux how-tos, faqs and mini-
how-tos and read about the boot scenarios in which you are interested.
