Ok - problem - I get this error "_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't
connect: errno = 111"
It displays this 9 times, and then says it's switching to runlevel 3,
and then sends the TERM signal.
I have a feeling this is a display problem - Dave - thoughts?

um... thats a tough one, not sure
i would try the standard svga setup and then 'test' it to see what
works...
ive never done a laptop install of linux before

when doing the partitioning with the graphical partition tool (part of
the
setup... think the first part of 'custom') highlight the windows
partition
and then click on edit (details may be wrong here, ive done a number of
linux installs since my last bdi, with varied types of linux's) it
should
have a box for 'mount point' or something like it, the menu will give
you
options like /boot /etc /tmp...etc... if you click in that box and type
/win-sys (thats what i use, others use /windoze or something) then it
will
mount the entire windows partition under /win-sys... CAREFULL, it gives
you
full access to it, including system files... you can ruin your windows
install by doing things with them.

Caught it in time - thanks :) I'll install Win98, then come back
and go into BDI and setup the drives, and install it in the MBR... how
do I do the linux MOUNT?

windows will overwrite the master boot sector WHEN you install it,
if you do the install of linux first AND make a boot floppy,
THEN install windows, you could still boot linux with the boot floppy
(i always make a boot floppy, im paranoid)

another thing you can do if you install windows first (i always do) is
to
have linux MOUNT the windows partition when it boots (i always put it
under
/win-sys) that way you have access to the windows stuff when in linux

i'd stop and install windows first, its just easier

you can install lilo to the master boot sector, and it will give you the
option of either dos (it thinks all fat partitions are DOS) or linux at
boot
time, or you can opt to not install to the master boot sector and later
make
a boot floppy (later in the install process)
i have done both... master boot sector is probably easier

Ok... here's what I've done so far - I deleted my FAT32 partition, and
I'm making a 2GB FAT32 partition in fdisk for Windows. That leaves 2GB
of sector space left on the drive for BDI to deal with; that a viable
way to do things?

i would let the 'custom' part of the BDI do that, it's got a nice
graphical
setup
just remember to do the 'custom' install, or it will try to repartition
and
reformat everything... i think (never actually done anything BUT a
custom
install).
you can use toms root boot floppy to save everything on you disk if you
have
somewhere to keep it
boot with it and do a man tar
you can use tar and bz2
to consolidate everything on the drive and then zip it up
that is what i do to backup this system (but it's dual booting right
now, so
i do it from the linux side, then reboot and burn the bziped file to a
cd---they have all compressed to less then 600 megs so far

That's what I'm doing right now - just checking Windows for stuff I need
to save. Should I make a partition in fdisk for Linux part/swap or just
FAT32 and let Linux make it's own partition?
