You can change the file permissions so that EMC can run under accounts other
than root, but you have to be more of a Linux guru than I to make it work. I
just run under root and leave it at that. I know about the security
implications, but am willing to accept that I could potentially mess up a
lot of things if I start dinking around as root. As far as I am aware there
is not speed or performance considerations based upon the account you are
logged in under.
Regarding the slowness: My guess is that you are running freqmod.o which is
quite a resource pig. If you go into the .ini file you want to increase the
PERIOD value and EMC will then use less resources and leave more CPU cycles
available for the screen updates and mouse response. I generally use the
responsiveness of the mouse as my guide to determine if I have the PERIOD
value for freqmod.o set properly. If the mouse response is blazing fast you
can decrease the PERIOD value. If the response is terrible I increase the
value of PERIOD. Just be aware that if the value of PERIOD is made too small
your machine will crash when you start EMC.
BTW, a 233 is not a blazingly fast machine to run freqmod.o. It will work if
you make the period value big enough.

on one of icons on the desktop to launch EMC I get the EMC splash screen for
a few seconds, then it goes away and nothing else happens. If I start
emc.run from a console window I can see that it starts to load up but then I
get several messages about permissions and the application fails.

mouse becomes unresponsive for several seconds at a time and the screen
updates may take several seconds as well. This machine is a pentium II
233MHz. Does emc just run that slow? Would the performance be acceptable if
run as a regular user instead of root?
