Sorry, I'm being dense. Isn't the translator the piece of software
that converts dxf to g code?

I don't understand if you mean:

CAD Package creates
dxf file
which is interpreted by translator to
g code
which is interpreted by EMC or other controller to twiddle bits for the motor controller.

or do you mean

which is interpreted by path generator to
mysterious intermediate code
which is interpreted by translator to
g code
which is interpreted by EMC or other controller to twiddle bits for the motor controller.
