You can go to MDI mode, and enter commands in the window, but you
can't do anything with them unless the machine is out of estop and "on".
If you can jog around in manual, then you should be able to enter
MDI commands. Just hitting the enter key executes the MDI command
in the window. Note that it doesn't save these commands, once executed,
they are almost gone. (They sit in the window, and could be executed again
with another enter key, but otherwise they go away when you enter a
new command.)

Getting it out of estop, and free of limit switches is the hardest part of the
EMC setup.

Running one of the real (vs. sim) EMC programs without the appropriate
hardware can lead to hung processes, and other mule-ish behavior.
Sometimes a reboot is needed to clear hung kernel modules.
