First, try ctrl/alt/+ (that's the right hand keypad plus sign) to see if higher
res video modes have been included. This 3-key command should
cycle through all video modes that are acceptable to the video card/monitor
selections that are set into the X configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config

If that doesn't work, there is an Xconfigurator program (or script) that
will give you some menus to choose video card and monitor. it may only
have generic VGA selected now. After that, restart X and you should
hopefully have higher resolution.

You can override limits with a button on the screen, or change the
sense polarity for the limit switches in the xxx.ini file.
