Some time ago, someone was interested in sizing their power supply.
Here's info I developed over the years that will give you an
approximation of the size transformer you'll need, once you've figured
out how much power you need:

Core Area (sq in) =(approx) (Vrms * Irms/Hz)**0.58 (that's the VA/Hz
eq'n raised to the 0.58 power.

Best "E - I" laminations to use are closest overall to:
Height = (2.51*Area)**0.5
Width = (3.02*Area)**0.5
Stack Depth = (2.25*Area)**0.5

Then, using best size of laminations, the weight (lbs) will be approx
(2.5*Area)**1.5

This should yeild a very conservative unit, when wound with the proper
wire. If anybody wants to pursue an actual design, contact me off-line.
