I have a set of 5 (or maybe 6) telescoping gauges. They can be held inside
a hole and allowed to expand to the diameter. You then tighten the clamp
knob slightly and wiggle the handle around in the bore until you feel that
the springs have brought the tips to the true diameter, then you tighten the
knob fully and swing it off-axis a bit to allow it to be pulled out. then you
measure it with a micrometer. This works pretty well, but when getting close
to final diamater, i usually take the measurement 2 or 3 times to be sure I have
a consistant reading. These are a LOT cheaper than a set of internal
mikes.
