Hi Fortino, Shelby,

To drive a load like a SSS, you want the parallel port to SINK current.
Some parallel ports cannot SOURCE current as you describe.

I suggest you connect the + of the SSS to +5V, and pin 1 to the -
terminal. then when the pin goes low (>.5V or so), the SSS will turn
on.
