Howdy..
I started with a small table top machine. Now I have a bridgeport.
It cost a lot more to have a larger work area, the machine, the drives
and I spent a couple of days converting it from tape to computer. BUT
it is kinda like driving a real car instead of a pedal car. When I
first got it rewired I really didn't know how good a 2hp machine would
cut steel. Now I can never go back. Imagine a table that runs 120+ipm
instead of 35, and a mill that throws chips into the ceiling.
Bobcad cam has a sale on right now, they have called me a couple of
times. They have a demo you can download to try. The V19 has modeling
software. For Windows. I currently have a rpc stub error on the install.
IF you are into Linux, There is free software on the net for
download, search AYam. I have been playing with it. NO toolpath gcode
creation yet thou. You build with primitives just like in the bobcad.
Any modeling with burbs, curbs, nurbs, or primitives will get you
used to the future that is coming. The old days of building point by
point is about gone, you can make about any shape with different sized
balls, ellipses, squares cylinders. Just like stacking building blocks
to get any shape you want.
