Sherline vs. Taig head was Re: Has anybody tried BobCad software?

Ron,

Several things, really.

Most important is the motor and drive that comes with it. Universal
input--ac,dc,90-250v-- speed controlled dc motor. Motor mounting is
MUCH better than the Taig(just look at the pics of each on the Mfr's
sites...)

Next, although the taig and sherline both use 3/4-16 threads, they
are slightly different in the lengths of various features. And
sherline, IMO has a better selection--and better quality-- of spindle
related accessories.

The Sherline has a 10K RPM option. I don't know if Taig does. But if
they do, I'd again question their motor and it's terrible mounting.

And finally, the sherline is the head that Joe Vicar used to develop
his auto tool changer. He's working on adapting it to other heads,
but there's something to be said for using what it was made on/for.

Against this, if you don't mind the lower fit and finish of the
items, you can get spindle accessories from Taig at lower cost than
from sherline. (But I read earlier tonight 2 comments about what to
do to make the taig 3 jaw chuck grip steel 1-1/2" firmly; the single
response said, (paraphrased)"I don't know either. I just take light
cuts and deal with it" Now the question is not about lathes, but this
question/answer is in line with my personal experience of taig vs.
sherline parts. (They both work; but the sherline QC and finish is
better, IMO.)

And only an opinion, but in that opinion, Sherline is a better
company to deal with...

Ballendo

P.S. Paul over at www.cnconabudget.com is offering adapters to mount
the Sherline Head to the Taig. Based on the response, I'd say I'm not
alone in feeling that the Sherline head is overall superior to the
Taig. (But the Taig is superior to the sherline for steel cutting,
IMO.)
