What are the voltage ratings of both the stepper motors and the power
supply?
You probably read this in the Gecko manual, but the power supply voltage
should be at least 20x the stepper's rated voltage. This is even more
important for motors with high inductance, since they are slower to
allow current to flow. The method of overdriving them is to get a
quicker increase in current. As you try to step quicker, the phase
currents need to change more quickly, so a higher voltage is necessary.
(sorry if this is all review for you :)
Since you have a hardware step generator, maybe you need to look at
software settings. Do you have the steps/inch set correctly?
(remembering that the G201 is a microstepping drive, and requires 10
steps inputs per full step of the motor) Do you have the maximum speed
set correctly? Is the acceleration set high enough for the machine to
reach full speed within its travel range?
See if any of that helps (or if it's even new information)
