With windoze it's all about the hardware. I run XP and have run them
all. I have 1gig of memory and I think that is the key. I never,
really never have a crash or need to reboot. I leave the box on
always. I do a reboot because my cable modem company wants to
refresh my mac address, other than that it's solid.

I have always believed memory was the key with windows. Back when
3.1 and 3.11 came out I bought 65meg of ram at 450 bucks for each
16meg simm, yep $1800.00 for 64meg of ram. It was alot of money but
as folks around me were complainin of crashes and the O'l dreaded
blue screen I never had a crash then. And I was usin memory
intensive programs such as adobe photoshop and pagemaker, it was my
business so the outlay was worth it.

Linux is stable but the available software titles are lacking.

Back to on topic-ness. I run a Bridgeport cnc boss5 with dos (ahha).
Works great but one downside is ahha is hoggish. It doesn't want to
share the box with any other programs. So it's back to the "dual
boot-two step" just like the days when windows would not run some
dos software resident.

What it comes down to is gimme hardware, all I can afford. That's
pretty easy these days. A P-III running at a gig-hz with 250meg-ram
and 20gig-O byte hard drive can be had for 150 to 200 bucks (no
