Ray,

I agree that I'm geting close. But I'd like to know HOW close.

My first attempt at starting Linux was RedHat 5.2, as provided with the
"Linux for Dummies" (aptly named) book. My first computer was a P233
Windows95 box, but when the install program locked up in a loop, I decided
to resurrect an old computer and dedicate it to Linux to minimize the
confusion factor. Well, as I went along I ended up replacing the cpu, hard
drive, motherboard, video card and case in the "old" computer, ending up
with what I have now:

P150mmx, Intel AN430TX motherboard, 32 Megs ram, STN Nitro3D pci video card
with 4 megs, 6GB HD, CDROM, and a 3.5 floppy. Still strictly Linux for emc.

All seem to work OK. But the first attempt at a clean 5.2 installation
failed with the same loop during the workstation install. Using the custom
install I was able to get Linux started, but I could only boot from the
floppy. Once booted, it would run from the hard drive.

Dave Land burned a CDROM with RedHat 5.2 and Tim's script and associated
RTLinux, emc etc. I loading his 5.2 version and it seemed to go well,
better than my previous attempts. For the first time, I could boot from
the hard disk, and xwindows started right up too.

When I attempted the updates from the EMC cdrom, however, I received an
"out of space", or some similar error. Sooooooo, re-partition the hard
disk and start over. Again, went smoothly until the updates. Didn't run
out of space, but several update files failed to load, including XFree86
3.3.6 - "could not load", and a bunch of cyrillic fonts that I do not need
or want anyway. I guess the older version of XFree86 is probably OK since
everything seems to work. I'm not sure which files I really need, or where
they need to be located, so it's hard to know if all of the critical
software is present. But so far it looks pretty good.

Thanks. I really appreciate everyone's assistance. Dave said that he'd be
working on the 6.2 release soon. I think he did a great job with 5.2 and
as I said, my biggest problem is simply not knowing what I need. A list of
files needed for RTLinux and emc and where they should be located would
sure help.
