Hi,

Initially I struggled a bit getting RH5.2 to work and, as with most other
people, I found that it was incompatible hardware. There are a few older
boards out there, mostly in the P60 - P100 range, which have incompatible
BIOSs and which just won't work with Linux (at least the earlier releases).
The first machine I tried linux on had such a board and, whilst I got linux
itself working, I just couldn't get the RT patch to work - swapping the
motherboard worked magic and the first attempt got it up and running.
The problem it, of course, that there is no way of determining before
installation whether the board will work or not.
The other problem area is the video card and monitor. The default
installation will usually set itself up to work in 640 x 320 mode - not very
useful but at least working. However, the first thing I then do is to
install XF86Setup from the RPM and this then makes setting up the video much
easier - why XF86Setup isn't installed by default baffles me as it seems
such a fundamental utility. This allows you to try all possible combinations
without trashing the whole thing as, at each trial, if you don't acknowledge
that a particular setting works OK, the machine automatically goes back to
the original setting so you can try something else.
