This is what I was trying to say (quote from your "stepper basics" white
paper):

"Eight-wire motors are about 3% more efficient when parallel connected then
an equivalent half-winding connected six-wire motor..."

I consider 3% "slightly better", and not worth the effort!

Yes, that's what I meant when I said "1/2 the current can allow...".
Instead of needing say 4A for a 1/2 winding, one can use 2A and the whole
winding. Again, won't run as fast! Full current through the whole winding
usually results in the magic smoke getting out of the stepper, if not also
the driver!
