This is all very offtopic, so I will respond only this occasion. I dont
get to read here except every
week or two, so dont respond, you'll just tie up valuable resource space
here for those doing actual CNC work..
Your comments are typical of the pirate community, everything should be
free, and no-one should pay for software. And thats a great thing, itd be
nice too if money grew on tree's and all stores were simply take as you
wish, no need to pay anything. Utopian paradise!! .
However, growth is killed by such things. I spend approximatly 10 hours
each day, seven days a week supporting Mach3, both in writing code, and
running support functions. I pay about $60,000US per year in payments to
individuals like myself and overhead costs to do this. Mach3 is sold in
about 30 Countries, with an OEM distributership program with over 2 dozen
distributers in various countries.
The time and resources to run even a small company such as mine is
suprising in its complexity and resource usage. Literally thousands of
people have been helped and guided into CNC through the Mach series and
while Im probably the most knowledable on the shortcomings of Mach, and the
things I need to do to make it more robust, the fact is, it helps alot of
people. If everyone thought as you, Mach3 would not exist. When its costs
exceed its revenues, it will cease to exist. Its really that simple.
There are those that selflessly donate their time to writing code and
releasing programs for free. (EMC for example) That, however, takes a great
many dedicated and talented people, few would be willing to write complex
source code for people such as yourself . If you truly believe your mantra,
how about this.. Take 10 years of your life, study hard each day, write tens
of thousands of lines of code, then release the program for free. Help each
of the over 100 people each day that will contact you for guidence, help or
just a sympathetic ear for their problems, find dedicated, talented and very
selfless poeple to aid in documentation, videos , and other support
information collation. find equally talented poeple to take care of web
sites and forums. Find the same sort of people to aid in support from
several directions such as additive forums, more to do support functions for
industry and screen design theory for industry. Basically become a hermit
devoted to doing what you love to do. Then ..while your giving this away..
go to the fridge and have an imaginary drink to cool off,(oh my..its
empty..). But Im sure the great feeling of protecting the proletariat from
capitalistic ideals will quench your thirst. Youll know that all the work
you do is fully appreciated by people such as yourself, who while they decry
capitalism, live of the fruits of others labours and add basically nothing
to the equation, your life is well worth giving up for their comfort or
amusement after all.
Listen, Bud, I have no great problem with Piracy, it exists, and in many
ways, helps to spread the word about what my software can do, and makes
others want to purchase it. You can teach me nothing about piracy, I come
from a very dark programming background. Just as musical bands today are
finding that music piracy has helped to grow their fan base, I have found
that piracy also increases the amount of people using Mach3. Eventually,
almost every pirate buys a license. I get dozens of letters from people
admitting they have been using cracked versions, and deciding to jump in as
a fully licensed user. I welcome them to the group. But be warned that in
life there is no free ride. While a hardware maker is better protected as
one has to do a great deal of work to copy hardware, software copying is
easy. Mach3 is, however, better protected than many suspect. My background
makes me something of an expert in software protection.. better than most. I
could easily make the protection daunting, and dangerous, after all, Im
controlling a machine here, its very easy to allow it to destroy a job it
senses as intricate. Or I could make it work only on one computer, with web
accessable key technology. I refuse to do so, my licenseing is about as
liberal as it gets, free updates, never pay again licensing with multiple
computer support puts me in a class far removed from Microsoft.. Fact is,
your preaching to the wrong choir here on piracy, the people here appreciate
new things, and higher capabilities, and they know licensing fuels that
engine. Were more people like yourself, we'd all be using DOS, and very
limited capability programs. No-one would write anything that is
downloadable, so while people like you have a place in this process, its
limited to being a bad example of how to run things, and a perfect example
of how to make everyones life more difficult. So fer gods sake, if your
gonna pirate, go ahead, pirate, but dont brag about it, its really not much
of an accomplishment, a monkey with a keyboard can pirate... Tells us about
your accomplishements when you actually have some and have something to be
proud of, Ill never get rich with my pricing and licensing policies, but I
do have a huge amount of pride in what Ive done, and the people Ive
helped....even such as yourself...
(Sorry for the OT guys.. I just felt the need to respond to this one. :)
