I looked into this a while back.As Ballendo mentioned the only real
problem is dirt. If you enclose the bearings and fit spring loaded felt
wipers it should work quite well. You must make sure that the bearings
are accurately parallel to the edges of the flatstock. If not you will
put a lot of side load on the bearings.

Skate bearings are dirt cheap so even if they do eventually wear out
they are cheap to replace.
