Graham,
You wouldn't want to use a 120° cutter IMO. Chatter city, poor
finish, etc. 60° cutters are common.
I'd not use the hex bar, though it would work.
I think you'll find it far easier to set up and use the square bar.
As mentioned previously, you can simply place it in a couple of--
inexpensive--vee-blocks, and machine short flats where you'd like to
give support or place tapped holes or through holes for mounting.)
There's really no need to make the entire bar into a "flat" with 90°
edges, IMO.
(You did say you were seeking fast,light, easy, and cheap. I smell
feature creep<G>)
