at this time, its the most stable and efficient software development
model in the world.
76% of servers in the world rely on it (apache).
99% of top 100 websites depend on it (99 of top 100 websites by traffic
use a variant of open source, either apache, postgre, or mysql)
it has opened ms source code (microsoft "shared source" model), cut
prices (ms pricing in asia, africa, gov pricing),
and vastly increased choice, capacity and tools throughout the world.

re: stable product: oracle, db2, masterscam ?
its all big bucks $$, buy it, then buy support contract, and then they
wont fix *your* problem,
and then they won't tell you what your problem is, they'll refer you to
a "reference platform",
where "we have everything working, you mustr have done something wrong ...!

I develop mixed systems for real world problems, have done for 17 years,
and make
very good systems based ona mix of these (kind of like cnc stuff .. a
little of this (gecko, rutex, xylotex), a little of that (hiwin, star,
thk; sound logic, cnc4pc, etc..),
get the *best* solution for your needs.
So a galil motion control card or a plc makes sense for *many* things
(kone cranes, 900 metric tons cnc machine, 170 metres high),
but not for what most of us here need/want to do.
EMCx is a good choice, if you want to put in the time to learn it.
MACHx is a good choice, if you want to put in the time to learn it.
BOTH are excellent bang/buck, much better than 95% of commercial offerings.
So is rhino3d.

And yes, i *also* develop sw, and not as a hobby. Next month I will
release a platform to do 100M
financial transactions a day.
Print them, do accounts, book them, collect them, translate them.
And it's both "typical" commercial stuff (editrans, adobe coldfusion)
and open-source (postgres sql, apache).

Whatever system you decide to learn (like rhino, solidworks, [yikes
autocad]) it all has a learning curve.
Unfortunately, the more powerful stuff has a steeper and higher learning
curve. Just don't dismiss EMCx falsely.
IF you go for MACHx or EMC either will certainly fill your requirements.

Good luck with your efforts.
