Perhaps it should be more clear about what the differences between
distributions are.

EMC is no longer being developed. I think the only place to get it is
the CVS repository or maybe some old mirror sites.

EMC2 is the new version with active development. The major change was
the addition of the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for handling the
interface to hardware. Along with this came a re-write (and major
improvement) to much of the lower level code. The preferred method of
installing EMC2 is to install a standard Ubuntu system, then install
the EMC2 Ubuntu packages.

The BDI is a complete Debian install that installs a kernel with real
time support. It also allows you to install the tools for development
(or at least it used to). EMC2 can be compiled/built/ran on this
platform (or at least it used to, I haven't tried a recent BDI).
However, the EMC installed by the BDI is unique to the BDI.
