What about the EAS microstep board I've mentioned different times?

and also
http://www.fromorbit.com/projects/picstep/index.php
The first has 'C' source code available, and the second has ASM source code
available!
The LMD in both boards is a bipolar chopper drive. Unless you mean a "build
your own" output stage. The software should still be useable!
