Wally,
There most certainly ARE times manual machining is faster. When I'm
doing a one-off, or working on a repair/modification job, it's vastly
faster most of the time to do it manually. I have the luxurey of both a
full size manual and CNC mill, so it's moot for me.
Be aware, if you have ballscrews, you have lost the ability to treat
your CNC mill the same as an acme fitted manual!!! Cutter forces are
more than enough to back drive ball screws and powered down servo
motors!!! Under the right conditions, a 1/4" end mill or even smaller
can move things around, a 1/2" or larger can cause you to ruin a set of
shorts if it takes a big hop in the wrong direction.
Say you are milling a square boss on top of a part. Moving from X+ to X-
along the near side (climb cutting) when you reach the desired X
location, you have to lock the X gib, unlock the Y gib, then do the Y
move. Where this will bite you but good is going into an inside corner
while climb cutting. Trust me on this one.
