On the giant planer (25' long bed) I used to work by, they had cranks and
handwheels that had dog clutchs just like on a bridgeport knee. They had a
collar that kept the handwheel from falling off the shaft. They had cut a
small counterbore on both clutch faces that allowed a compression spring to
be installed on the shaft. Once you grasped the handle/ wheel and pushed it
in, you could turn the axis. Let go and the spring would disengege the handle
so it would be safe. Not a bad idea, easy to implement and it would reuse
existing parts. You may have to modify the nose of the leadscrew/ballscrew
but I recall they had all this stuff mounted on an extension shaft. Was safe
on large power fed machines, guess it would be good on CNC stuff too.
