As I understand it, the Gecko drives partially bridge the gap between
step/dir and servos, but do not give the velocity control that true servo
systems provide.

It seems as though in order to get true velocity control, the encoder
feedback needs to reach the control earlier in the processing stage. I do
not really know how this differs from the step/dir control /320/340
configuration exactly, but I suspect it relates to the number of
computations of position that is typically done in a true servo system
compared to the number of postions considered in a typical pc based
step/direction control. There seems to be a difference in the smoothness of
true velocity commands because of the number of comparisons typically made.
I hope someone with more experience (maybe Jon Elson) can clarify this
difference for us.

Are people using 320/340 gecko drives with EMC and DeskNCrt? How are they
typically hooking up the encoders--to the drives and the control with the
camtronics board?

Is DeskNCrt just as good or complete as the Lunix based EMC?
