My Shoptask is set up with 42T:21T 3/8" width XL series pulleys to get the
2:1 ratio. I do currently have one axis set up with a 42T:14T for a 3:1
ratio. I have gotten a number of these steel pulleys from McMaster Carr and
they have more than enough meat to bore them out and it is quite an easy
task. Don't see any reason you need to go to the expense of the larger
pulleys. I understand that it will yield a longer belt life and a greater
load capacity, but I think you would find that something like a 40:20 or
42:21 will work just fine and save you some money.
If you think these pulleys are expensive just take a look at the L series or
the GT and you will suddenly consider XL pulley cheap.
