Well, here's Steve's story on getting LINUX_RTLINUX_EMC
up and running on a Pentium 100, 32 megs ram, 1 gig scsi
hard drive, Cirrus Logic GD-5430 video, Motorola Lifestyle
28.8 modem, cdrom and floppy.

About an hour to install RH 5.2, linux for dummies
About 15 hours to configure video for Xfree
about 15 hours to configure to recognize modem
About 4 hours and counting on RTlinux install, 2
times with Tims script, 2 times with Matt's instructions,
and I am right now on the 3rd try with Tim's script.

But hey, I will not give up! And those time estimates are
very conservative. I have used MS/Windows machines
only before this try with Linux.

Any helpful idea's I may not have tried would surely
be welcome.

Steve Carlisle

It seems like there is a lot of negative feeling going on over the
Linux/EMC installation thing and I think that most of it is coming from
folks who haven't tried it out. Jon Elson and Matt Shaver inspired me to
install in my shop. They both have had great luck with it and use it every
day- as do I now. I am not a programmer/IT specialist or computer guru in
any way. It just happens that the instructions given by Matt, Jon, and Tim
work! For instance, today I did a fresh install (on a Compaq 4540) of
RedHat 5.2, Rtlinux, and EMC in 1 hour and 15 minutes. How did I do it? I
used the install instructions that Tim gives out on his web site
(http://www.ktmarketing.com/CNC.html).
Why did I go with EMC? It is powerful, runs smooth, and is a lower cost
solution than Ah-ha, Maxnc, Bestsoft, etc... There is also a lot more
potential power with the system. The authors listen to us and implement
new features/fix bugs. The source code is there for the programmers out
there who want to tinker with the system.
I use EMC in my shop to make parts and make money. I have been retrofitting
another mill and will be installing another EMC controller within the next
few weeks. I'm not a Linux nut, I just see a lot more potential with EMC
than the other systems.

Hoyt, I would think that you would have a great time with EMC, since you
are a programmer already.

Thanks,
Dan
