if you are set to start the GUI at boot up you can edit the /etc/inittab file
and change the first entry from id:4:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault:
that will let the system boot to a normal console

you can also just hit <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F2> to get a console
(actualy F1-F6) <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F7> will bring back the GUI

or open a terminal window and give the command
init 3 or telinit 3 these will re-initalize the system in
runlevel 3 (console mode)
