Newer Ethernet cards use "twisted pair", which is normally connected by
an 8-contact RJ-45 connector. The phone line modem should have an
RJ-11, a 6-contact housing with only 4 contacts installed. You can probably
put an RJ-11 plug into an RJ-45 receptacle.

eth0 is your first ethernet card. Either it is expecting one, and you don't have
one, or it detects one, but is not getting the correct driver for it. Many cards
are supported, but sometimes it needs a little help finding the right driver
to use.
