If all it does is hang for a bit during boot up, and then continue, it's
probably not worth worrying about until it comes time to make it work.

No. Your modem should be, "ttyS0", or possibly on an older system, "cua1".
Type:

man setserial

and give setserial the appropriate parameters; That should be about all the
OS hardware setup needed. Everything else you can do in the software setups.
