The /etc/rc.d/init.d directory has a bunch of scripts that start things up.
There are files in /etc/rc.d/ ( rc0.d through rc6.d) that start and stop
various functions when going from one "run level" to another.
These are the low level files that set up the network.
There should be a utility to turn networking off, but it varies depending
on which kernel version and distribution you have.

A quick fix would be to put two 50 Ohm terminators on a BNC tee, and put
that on the BNC connector on your ehternet card.
