intersting day

This morning I decided to put in a modem in Linux box and D/L EMC. The
first thing I discovered was that modem made mouse support vanish. I
recovered mouse by putting modem on COM2. Had to boot several times and in
the process of getting mouse back, boot failed about halfway through ini,
with 'kernal: Aiee, shutting down interrupt handler' message. Anyway the
system finally came up and booted as always. Phone as itself worked thru
modem, but KDE dialer config routine couldn't find modem nor config to it.
Anyone having a clue as to how to get this thing going, plz drop a note.
BTW, during the ini, machine said it recognized a new ethernet card and
also wanted new mouse config. I don't think so unless I can't tell diff
between modem and ethernet, and was same old mouse too. Thought ethernet
was on a coax cable, no? Also, final odd ball question of day, what does
'interface eth0' mean, and why is it failing during the ini?
Regards, Hoyt
