linux box

OK guys, I need some help. I have this box running and it's loaded with the
KDE system, looks and acts about like recent windoze setups. Am interested
in getting under that and, down to basic OS, command line and directory
stuff. Like to deal directly with the OS instead of funking around in all
that high level mishmish. Anyone?
