Tty is the old abrieviation for teletype. These days it's used for any dumb
terminal, i.e., a keyboard, for instance. The, "S", is for serial.

The ttyS0 or ttyS1, (one for mouse, one for modem), is so you can access the
modem through the system. In minicom, or whatever other term prog you're using,
you tell it which one in it's setup, and it uses it. You can also hook up a
keyboard for a dumb terminal, or any other serial device to it and use ttyS? to
access those, as well. If one doesn't work, try the other.

Set serial can be used to set up some initial parameters, but after that, it's
main usefulness is just reminding you of them, or occaissionally changing your
defaults.
