Darrel,
It's the Linux nightmare that upsets me... Software is not compatible
across versions and someone can compile in a "thing" and blow up
everything... I'm not a Linux hater, life is much to short for stupid
stuff like hating anything, but I dislike wasting my time on something I
know is not going to be standard and I can't plan for in the near
future.
Windows(V2(not many people used V2, and 3.0) used to be like that, but
since Windows NT4.0 it's been stable. I know it's not a real-time OS but
it is real-time enough for CNC, just people don't bother to understand
it well enough. Also the fact that the Printer port is not directly
accessible scares off a lot of people. In truth the printer port driver
code is simple and can be modified without much trouble at all. The
Windows NT DDK is free.
