Software pays my bills as well.

An edge finder is held in the collet and is used to detect the edge
of the metal, usually you have a .500 or .200 round spindle that
you sneak up on the edge with. When it hits, you are half that
diameter from the edge of the material and can use the dials to get
the rest of the way. This usually gets you to the edge accurate to
about .001 or so. Depending on how accurate your work needs to be
some just sneak up on the edge and when they hear the bit hit the
metal they call that the edge. Most commercial edge finders have a
shank thats either 3/8 or 1/2. I recall a couple of guys complaining
that the MAXNC couldn't take that size, and just wondered.

Sorry about the edge finder, I forgot... just to show my ignorance on
the subject what is an edge finder ?
Remember Electronics and Software are what I do for a living CNC Mill is
more of a hobby...
