Well, it is very nice to take a piece off the machine, and later need to
put it back on, and be able to machine some new feature on it with
coordinates consistant to within .002" or so from the first pass.
Sometimes, when doing large panels, I have to shift the panel over
on the table, because it exceeds the travel range of the machine.
Nice to pick up the center of an existing hole and reset the reference
from that, and have everything come out as if it had been made in
one setup on a bigger machine. The edge finder lets you do this
(although I usually use a dial test indicator on a spindle mount for
locating holes).
